Four Days Into a Great New School Year!

L brought in his abacus to demonstrate it to us today. We all threw out second grade addition problems, and he was able to answer every one of them correctly in a snap. Way to go, L!
This was the view out our back windows: the second grade garden is being cleared by parents and grandparents and should be open for business soon. I wonder what we will grow?
We read "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes and talked about our names. We made a necklace using a chart to tell others about us. (Example: one black bead for every pet you have, one white bead for each school you have attended etc.) We also spelled out our names in letter beads.
Here is a finished project! We observed other classmates' necklaces to see what we could learn about them according to their beads.
Math today was Exploration Stations! Once rotation had us using cubes to count and build...

...another station had us using shapes to build new shapes.

(Note to parents: There has been some confusion about who records reading minutes in the agenda each evening. PARENTS  record the minutes just like last year.  I know the handbook said something different, and I apologize for the confusion.)
