In the book, there is a character named Deskarina. (Deskarina is a cousin to the Tooth Fairy who is really named Dentarina.) Deskarina comes into the room every so often to check and see if the children's desks are clean and neat. She leaves prizes for children who have clean desks!
We wrote our first journal piece about Deskarina. We described what she looked like and what she does for a living.
In the book, Deskarina sometimes left candy for the students. In our district, we cannot have candy. We decided we'd better leave a note out to let her know when she visited our room that she could not leave candy for us.
We learned the universal sign for "NO" as in "no candy".
Here are our first published pieces about "Deskarina":

(It's the teacher again!) What you can't see is the excellent handwriting and illustrations on these pieces. The students remembered that:
- Sentences start with a capital letter.
- Sentences end with an end mark. (., !, ?)
- Sentences make sense.
- Second graders are careful spellers.
Well, check times four! We are off to a wonderful year of writing in the second grade.
