In our classroom, we have been studying Holidays of Light. In all cultures and religions, light is a part of celebrations during this dark time of the year. We have been talking about how WE can be light in this world. One of our projects is to collect money ("A Handful of Change to Change the World") to send with our aid, Ms. L, to help bring electricity (light!) to a village in Belize over the holidays.
Here is our presentation:
BK: December's the time for all to learn why handbells ring and candles burn.
December's the time for all to know why people sing and small lights glow.
EH: December's the time for all to hold sweet hopes and dreams for young and old.
LA: One little candle shines with all its might.
JF: Two little candles twinkle a lovely light.
EKM: Three little candles make a pretty sight.
GR: Four little candles glow so strong and bright.
EJ: Five little candles flicker in the night.
IP: Holidays of Light Around the World: Lights of winter darkness are a source of warmth and inspiration, a sign of joyful celebration. Candles flicker, brightest light. Why do they light up the night?
RK: Las Posadas-Mexico: Long parades of lighted candles. Songs, pinatas filled with treats. Honoring a family's journey, long ago through city streets.
EM: Hanukkah: Candles in menorah glow, eight tall candles in a row. Families gather and recite, blessings with each one they light.
ER: Christmas: Lighted candle in a window, more than just a decoration. Shining light into the darkness, light of hope and celebration.
CB: Kwanzaa: Candles fill the tall Kinara, candles black and red and green. Each one stands for something different; families talk of what they mean.
CD: St. Lucia - Sweden: Candles on a young girl's head, light the day away from bed. Brighten up the long, dark days. Showing light is on the way.
JM: I have a light that's mine, I'm going to let it shine. I have a light in me, it shines for all to see.
JA: You have a light in you, you can let it shine brightly, too. You have a light you see, to shine for you and me.
All:
This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
These little candles bright, are such a pretty sight.
These little candles bright, are such a pretty sight.
These little candles bright, are such a pretty sight.
Let them shine, let them shine, let them shine.
These little children's lives, are such a pretty sight.
These little children's lives, are such a pretty sight.
These little children's lives, are such a pretty sight.
Let them shine, let them shine, let them shine.
Then we led the audience in a chorus of "This Little Light of Mine" using our flashlights for light.
Mrs. G is back from Hawaii so her cousin could return to Kansas. She awarded Birthday Books.
We led the school in the school song.
Every student had at least one parent there, so we took time for a photo op after the program.
Parents: your children's lives are definitely lights in this dark world.
EH got her Birthday Book.
JM's aunt Aunt Mary sent these Texas ornaments for everyone in our room!
Thank you families for all your support of our classroom.
(Shout out to our guest photographers: ER's mom and LA's dad, and to CD's mom for working the lights. Thanks for your help.)
