Happy Happy Joy Joy

Today, we will have two posts on our blog. Be sure to keep scrolling down, because the next post shows yesterday's party pics.
Today was the December Reading Celebration. We added up our reading minutes for the month and the total was 8,964 minutes (or 149 hours or 6 days)! For such a short month, this was an incredible amount of reading. The top two readers, separated by just 3 minutes, were great friends E and C. E read for 1136 minutes, and C read for 1133 minutes! Congratulation, boys on a job well done and for being such good sports.
See this? This is my favorite gift of all time. (Well, except for that engagement ring D gave me...) OK: favorite CLASSROOM gift of all time. This is the Cadillac of pencil sharpers and may prolong my years in the teaching profession just by the amount of time and hassle it will save me each and every day. Thank you parents for loving us enough to search Amazon to find this!

Today was Gingerbread Day. First we drew paper Gingerbread Men with numbers from a box. This divided us into groups. The groups had to go on a hunt and find hidden erasers that spelled out "gingerbread".
Looking high and low for the letters.
Here is a successful group!
Next, we worked in teams to made words out of the letters in gingerbread.
The two winning teams had over 60 words!
This was also a great team-building activity!
Next, we colored gingerbread cutouts. These were our standards of measurement.
We measured the perimeters of our Gingerbread Men.
We used marshmallows, red hots and raisins and compared the results.
We also measured the area with those three items and compared the results.
We had a break for a Holiday Musical put on by the third grade.
E had two special visitors for lunch today!
We came back from lunch to finish our unit on area and perimeters.
We learned lots of strategies for counting large amounts of items.
Next, Mrs. O gave us all two dollars worth of credit to decorate a gingerbread man. We had to figure up what items we wanted on our cookies and how much it would cost. We could not go over $2.00!
Here were some of the items we cold choose from.
Here is a cookie plan and the items purchased to decorate a gingerbread man.
Finished product. Hmmm. The G'bread man is under there somewhere....
We finished the day with a trip to the library to listen to Ms. G read a book about a Gingerbread Man who lived in the library! Wearing her UPS pants, she read to us while we sat in the Bat Cave.
We had a wonderful day. I hope that you all have a great holiday break. See you on January 4, 2011.

I want to end this blog by saying good-bye to former second grade/present kindergarten teacher, Mrs. B. She has been at our school for 22 years, and this is her last day to teach. She will be retiring over the holidays. I wish there was a way to get all her experience and enthusiasm for teaching out of her head and heart and transfer it to incoming teachers! We thank you Mrs. B for all the years that you have taught and loved children. We've been blessed to have you here.
