Groundhog Day

The teacher arrived early to run some copies for Ground Hog Day activities, and get some things ready for the field trip. Something seemed off: no street lights, no traffic lights...and come to think of it: no lights anywhere in view at the school.
Checking the classroom thermometer: baby, it's cold outside! (And this is on a sheltered porch. It showed 18 degrees on the sensor of my car.)
Here's the view of the hall from one way...
...and the other way.
The students starting arriving to our dark and cold classroom. The field trip was cancelled. But guess what?
We were having a great time!
C had brought his Lego flashlight and was glad to share it with anyone who needed it.
The Bumblebees met on the carpet and decided to have a day at school we'd always remember.
We began with some Groundhog Day activities by taking a survey to see if we thought the groundhog would not see his shadow (spring is coming!) or would see his shadow (six more weeks of winter). We polled, graphed, discussed and then we Goggled the question "Did the groundhog see his shadow?" (because, miraculously, the internet was working even when the lights and heat were not.) And the answer is: No shadow; spring is coming. (Just not soon, apparently.)

We had some great activities, and discussed what would the cafeteria serve if they could not cook food. (The answer: peanut butter sandwiches and an apple.) After lunch, the teacher was told to call parents and see if they could come pick up their cold (yet happy) children. And guess what? The Bumblebee class was one of the first rooms in the school to empty!

Parents: I appreciate your good attitudes and your quick response. You are raising some incredible (and flexible!) children and I'm blessed to walk by your side in this journey through second grade.

Thank you.
