BookSpring Read-a-thon Kick Off Assembly!

Today was the kick off for the BookSpring Read-a-thon. Our class presented the assembly this morning. We met on the stage at 7:30 am sharp.
Mrs. Gooch introduced us to the audience. The entire school was there (K-5), and a lot of parents came to watch, too!
Ms. O'Brien introduced us and told the reasons why this program is so important: it puts books into the hands of children in our community who do not have books. This helps them become better and more interested readers.
First we sang our song:

R-E-A-D
(To the tune of Y-M-C-A)

Here at, here at Gullett, what a school!
We say reading, reading is super cool,
And we love it, found how fun it can be
When we go to the li-brar-y.

To find, find a book, just for you,
This will be more, fun then you ever knew!
You'll be reading, never putting it down,
It's the hottest spot in our town.
We grab a book and we R-E-A-D.
It's so much fun here when we R-E-A-D.
Mrs. Gooch is so sweet, she just can't be beat.
There's an author out there for you.
We grab a book and we R-E-A-D,
It's so much fun here when we R-E-A-D.
We love our Mrs. Gooch,
We want to give her a smooch (SMACK!!)
There's an author out there for you....READ!
We think Mrs. Gooch really enjoyed our program.
Some students volunteered to read parts from the poem we wrote:

At Gullett we love to read.
We have all the books we need.

Did you know some kids have none?
Without books how can reading be done?
How can we help these kids in need?
What if we raised money for the time we read!

We will have a Read-a-thon, everyone!
Earning books for other is so much fun!
You ask parents, grandparents and neighbors, too,
To pay you for all the reading you do.

You win prizes when your money is turn in,
And Gullett is the school that is sure to win!
We beat every one, every year.
No other school can even come near!
I made up a song to help us know what to do,
We would like to teach it to you.
"Give Books to Kids" by Romi
(Sung to tune of "Happy Birthday)

Let's give books to kids,
Let's give books to kids,
We'll read and earn money,
To give books to kids!
Mrs. Gooch told us all about how to use the envelope for raising money while reading. She showed us the great prizes we can earn for our reading.
This is the trophy for the school that earns the most money in the BookSpring Read-a-thon. We have won it four years in a row, and would like to win it for a fifth year.
Here we are after our assembly, tired but satisfied that we will help put books in the hands of other local children who cannot afford to buy their own books. Way to go, Bumblebees!

(Parents, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to come see our program. A special thanks to Mrs. Mendoza for taking the pictures for our blog.)
