Welcome Back Wednesday!
Today was our 8th Zero the Hero Day. Ask your child to tell you how many days we have been in school! (PS: Continue to help your child count by 1, 2, 5 and 10 to 100: the 100th day off school will be here in early February!)
Today in Library, Ms. Gooch talked to us about the difference between fiction and non-fiction books.
All the books she showed us were about dinosaurs, but some were fiction and some were non-fiction. We had to find out how to tell the difference.
If we thought the book was fiction, we put our hands over our ears. If we thought it was non-fiction, we crossed our arms over our chests.
We reviewed our Dewey Decimal numbers to see where the non-fiction books can be found.
We are beginning a unit on fractions. We talked about how something can be symmetrical (the same on both sides). It can be divided by a line of symmetry, which shows where it can be divided for equal sides. Snowflakes are a perfect example of that! We read about snowflakes, and then we were ready to create own to hang in our classroom tree.
Take a closer look: these are really amazing snowflakes! And guess what? No two are alike!
(Of course, we carefully cut them over trashcans so our room would stay clean. This is a heads up because the students LOVED this activity and may be recreating them (often) at home.)
Sometimes, we find very creative things to do with our artwork. (And of course the teacher says, "Let me get a picture of that," right before she says, "Please don't do that again." Reminds me of when my son dumped spaghetti over his head in his high chair. Snap the picture, then remind him to not do that anymore. A bit of a mixed message!)
Your kids fill my heart with laughter each day. What is not to love about a first grader?
