Since we are almost second graders, all of our reading should be REAL reading. She talked to us about how to make a "Real Reading Salad".
When you make a salad, it is mostly green lettuce. She used green cards every time she stopped and wondered about something in the story as she read. She used red cards when she finished a few pages of text.
When we read, we must stop and ask questions about what is going on. It is exciting to: predict, locate, organize our thoughts, reflect and evaluate what is happening. (EX-PLORE). This will help with our enjoyment of the story and our comprehension.
We make connections through our reading in three ways:
TEXT TO TEXT (What other books does this make me think of?)
TEXT TO SELF (What does this remind me of in my own life?)
TEXT TO WORLD (What does this remind me of in the world around me?)
After a quick visit to the library for new books, we had some free reading books to practice making connections with our reading.
One great way to connect to your book is to think, "I wonder......" as you are reading.
We met on the carpet and discussed what connections we had made through our reading. Our room is a magic place: we are making tomorrow! Soon, we will be second graders, so we must continue to improve our skills and challenge ourselves.
(PS: All library books are due NEXT Friday, May 14.)
