Getting Smarter Every Day!

Joseph brought in a very interesting spy kit today.
Jacob had a ball from his visit to the Harlem Globetrotters.
Bella had a horse with an interesting story.
Emma had some beautiful rocks.
Thomas had a neat Lego figure from his toy room.

Ian drew a picture of a dagger and told us all about the uses of daggers. He got one at a Renaissance Fair but could not bring it to school because it is a weapon. He also told us places that daggers can be concealed (hidden).
We are finishing up our unit on flat shapes (also called plane shapes) and solid figures. Today we learned how to combine several shapes to make one shape. (The students told me they explained to their parents last night that a "vertice" is a corner during homework time!)
We got to have Exploration Station time to create things out of our shapes.
Every table had some interesting patterns and constructions.
Some people built flat figures....
...and some people built dimensional figures.
Some made flowers...
and some made people.
Don't you love that you can give 19 children the same materials and you can come up with 19 different results?

For centers today we:
  • Read a story about Franklin and the Tooth Fairy. Franklin is a turtle and he does not have teeth, so he did now know what a Tooth Fairy was! He imagined his Tooth Fairy as a Turtle Fairy. We all wrote a story about an experience we have had with the Tooth Fairy, and drew a picture of how we thought the Tooth Fairy looked.
  • We drew three dimensional figures in our Math journal.
  • We worked on our spelling words with gel pens.
  • We read this poem:
"Our First Grade Play"

Will you join our first-grade play?
You can dance and twirl.
You'll wear a purple shrt or skirt
Like every boy and girl.

The turkeys are the biggest birds.
They burst out from their cage.
Smaller birds and turtles too
Will chirp or whirl on stage.

We looked for words with er, ir and ur. We also looked for words that ended in -er and -est. We explained what the words "whirl" and "burst" meant. WOW! Our reading is amazing! Let your child read this poem to you.

Library books due tomorrow.
