Open Wide

JM lost a tooth on the day of our field trip to the dentist/orthodontist. How appropriate.
Every good field trip starts with a bus ride.
The dentist introduces himself to us. Three second grade classes were together for this time slot, and the other two second grade classes went in the afternoon.
The dentist gave us a little math lesson in how many years it takes to finish medical school to become a dentist. The answer? 22 years!
We broke into groups and rotated through five stations. This station showed us what sugar does to our teeth. Soft drinks have acid and sugar in them and they eat away at our teeth. A swallow of a soft drink will stay on your teeth for 20 minutes!
Some sobering facts: a Coke has 17 sugar cubes worth of sugar in it and a high level of acid. He showed us a picture of the teeth of a child who drank soft drinks all the time. It wasn't pretty.
At another station, we learned about brushing and flossing. Here LA is brushing Howdy's teeth. We had to watch out because Howdy liked to squirt water on us!
We learned about different kinds of braces and retainers. Some are practically invisible.
We got to see how a mold of a mouth is made. (These can be flavored like bubblegum and even watermelon.) The mold hardens very quickly.
This station showed us how braces are attached and tightened.
We left with some stuffed goodie bags. A good time was had by all!
(We did do work today. Here we are working on dedications for a Very Special Book we have been working on all year. HINT: Look for it to come home around Mother's Day....)
