Thursday: A Balancing Act

The day began with good news: The Window Washer (aka: L or C's little brother) found his missing stuffed animal this morning. We think he did the Happy Dance.
And then? He rode off into the sunset. Happy Trails to you, L. We are glad you like to drop by our room often.
The pumpkin patch outside our classroom is growing daily. Can you guess what characters from books these pumpkins represent?
We wrote letters to the Great Pumpkin....just in case he decides to stop by our room for Pumpkin Day tomorrow.
Today, we were challenged in science to find the balance point on this picture of a pencil.
We worked as groups, and found that a counter balance was necessary to make it balance.
Every group was successful in this experiment.
We LOVE hands on Science!
Another group that completed the task.
By George, I think they got it!
So, Mrs. O challenged us with another task: Can you make a REAL pencil balance on its point?
The materials she gave us were:
1. A sharp pencil.
2. A piece of flexible wire.
3. A Popsicle stick stick taped to the desk to balance it on.
Two clothespins for counterweights.
After trying for a looonnnnggg time, no one was successful in making the real pencil balance.
We gathered on the carpet for a strategy session. Why would the picture of the pencil balance? We noticed where the balance point was, and where the counter balance went.
We applied this knowledge to our real pencil point balancing.
And we have success!
Another team finds the balance point...
...and another one!
We are so glad that we kept on working and did not give up.
How did we balance this pencil on its point?
We found the counter balance(s) had to be below the pencil. Way to master the problem, Bumblebees!
At Library period, Ms. G had a balance beam for us to walk. Can you guess why?
We watched a short online movie about a man who balanced himself and walked on a tight rope between the Twin Towers in New York!
Here is the book based upon this true story. It is called "The Man Who Walked Between the Towers" by Mordicai Gerstein about Phillippe Petit's 1974 balancing act high about New York City. (Don't you love it when our subjects compliment each other?)

Tomorrow is Pumpkin Day. Can't wait!!!
