It's beginning to look a lot like....second grade!

We are working very hard to be sure that we are ready for second grade. Look at this: we are beginning to read chapter books!
Today we talked about literacy groups. Several people are choosing to read the same chapter book as their friends. These groups will discuss the books when they are finished, and then will come up with a project based on the book.
We love free reading! Our room is so quiet you can hear a pin drop.
Listen:
"Ping!"
The transition to chapter books is easy when you love reading as much as we do. Some favorite first grade friendly chapter book series are:

Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park
The Magic Treehouse Series by Mary Pope Osborne
Ready, Freddy by Abby Klein
Flat Stanley Series by Jeff Brown
Amelia Bedelia by Herman Parish
Jigsaw Jones by James Prellar
Cam Jansen by David Adler

Do you have any other suggestions? Let us know!

Mrs. Jarriel, our computer teacher and yearbook sponsor, is letting our students take the pictures for the yearbook. Everyone got a chance to take 5 pictures today to submit to her. Maybe yours will be chosen!
Centers:
Poetry: We read books about kites and the wind. We read a poem about the wind and illustrated it in our Poetry Notebook.
We stamped our Word Wall words.
We read books about kites and decorated kites for our room. We had to follow written instructions to complete this center. (Look in the agenda for instructions on how to make a kite.) We'll have pictures of our kites soaring from our classroom ceiling tomorrow.
In math, we are comparing and ordering by area. We used tiles to find the area of different shapes. We also made shapes on our geoboards with rubberbands when we were finished.
