More hanging around.
Four square.
Football.
More monkey bars.
And back inside to Science. We remembered from first grade that plants need air, water and light to live. We decided to take 4 of the same plants and change up what we gave them. One plant would get air, water and light. The other three plants? One plant would only get air and water; one would only get air and light; and one would only get water and light. We carefully wrote out our plans for this experiment in our Science journal, and then wrote our predictions of what we thought would happen to these plants. We will make careful observations of these plants for the next few weeks.
And then? It's Pocket Day! Every 10 days we count our pockets. First, we estimated how many pockets we thought were in the classroom. Then, we took another step and gathered the data for our graph: we had to find out how many pockets each person in the classroom was wearing. Then we added those numbers to get a classroom total. (We have to show our work in second grade.) The three people who had the closest estimation and correct total were given pocket sized notebooks!
We compared today's Pocket Day to the first Pocket Day. Which day had the most? Can your child read this mathematical sentence to you: 75 > 45 ? The King of Pocket Day this week was L. A. who had 10 pockets! (Alas, my camera battery died and we did not get a picture of him. We'll try for one tomorrow.) Tonight for homework we will show how many ways we can represent tomorrow's number: 21!
Update: My son, on his cross country bike ride, is now in Holbrook, Arizona. He has traveled 1014 miles. We are charting it on the map in our classroom.
